Memory Retrieval Effects on Filler-Gap Processing
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, I argue that the retrieval of filler-phrases in syntactic filler-gap dependencies is facilitated by encoding more information in the filler-phrase. Three self-paced reading experiments provide the evidence for this memory facilitation hypothesis: reading times decrease when more explicit whphrases and indefinites occur as fillers in three different syntactic constructions. Crucially, the decrease in reading times becomes visible only at the point of memory retrieval, i.e. the gap site. There is no effect of the amount of information encoded in the filler-phrase prior to the retrieval site.

Representational Complexity and Memory Retrieval in Language Comprehension.
Mental representations formed from words or phrases may vary considerably in their feature-based complexity. Modern theories of retrieval in sentence comprehension do not indicate how this variation and the role of encoding processes should influence memory performance. Here, memory retrieval in language comprehension is shown to be influenced by a target's representational complexity in terms ...
متن کاملSecond Language Processing of Filler-Gap Dependencies: Evidence for the Role of Lexical Access
Sentences that involve direct and indirect object relative clauses contain displaced syntactic constituents (or fillers) that do not appear in their canonical object position following the verb. During real-time comprehension, when the head of such a relative clause is encountered, it has been argued that the human sentence processing mechanism will automatically project a syntactic structure t...
متن کاملBridging the Gap: Evidence from ERPs on the Processing of Unbounded Dependencies.
Abstract Since the early days of generative grammar, the study of "unbounded dependencies" such as wh-questions and relative clauses has occupied a central place in both syntactic theory and language processing research. The problem that such constructions pose is as follows. In a normal wh-question, a wh-phrase is typically displaced to the left periphery of a clause (What did you say - to Joh...
متن کاملIdentifying the role of phonology in sentence-level reading.
Phonological properties of the words in a sentence have been shown to affect processing fluency and comprehension. However, the exact role of phonology in sentence comprehension remains unclear. If constituents are stored in working memory during routine processing and accessed through their phonological code, phonological information may exert a pervasive influence on post-lexical comprehensio...
متن کاملThe interaction of different working memory mechanisms and sentence processing: A study of the P600
While previous research has shown that working memory capacity (WMC) predicts sentence processing ability, the understanding of the relationship is limited as almost all studies have used the reading span task as their sole measure of WMC. The current study examined how the effects of garden-path sentences and filler-gap dependencies (as indexed by the P600) related to four measures of working ...
